Yesterday afternoon one of my fellow grad students stopped by my desk. I've been writing furiously this week in an (failed) attempt to finish up a chapter, so I took the opportunity to ask for a second opinion on one of my figures while I had a captive audience.
What he said: Wow, that's six years of work on one graph.
What he meant: Wow, can you believe you collected more than 1400 data points all by yourself?
What I heard: Wow, you've been working on this for six years, and all you have to show for it is one stupid plot?
