Thinking time

Of all of the household chores that have to get done, mowing the lawn is my favorite. With all the loudness and slowness and monotony, it provides excellent time for thinking. You just point yourself in the right direction, and go. And nobody can bother you, because of the noise. You can go deep into your own little world while also being productive. So last week when the magical oil change fixed my lawn mower, I was thrilled. Before that, I'd been borrowing my neighbor's, which ruined the thinking because I was busy thinking about not breaking his lawn mower like I did mine. Or worse, he was doing it for me before I could get to it, which made me feel indebted. I baked cookies as a thank you, but he conveniently went on vacation before I could deliver them, and I ended up eating them myself.

Yesterday I finally got around to mowing the lawn, and boy did I do some good thinking. By the time I was done, I had a whole list of things that my roommate needs to take care of before she moves out. Upon finishing, I went in and wrote it down. If she ever announces when she plans to depart, it will be happily presented to her. I can't wait.
